Hair and Head Lice: Treatment and Prevention

PREVENTION:

  • Keep long hair tied up in ponytails or even better, braids or a bun.
  • Use a little hairspray to keep stray hairs contained.
  • Use tea tree oil either by adding a few drops to your regular shampoo, or by making a spritz by adding a few drops to water in a spray bottle.  Tea tree oil can be very drying, so only use a few drops (as directed).

TREATMENT:

  • There a plenty of options available.  Ask a pharmacist, especially if you have any known allergies or intolerances. A lot of parents recommend using Nyda. Its available at Costco and Rexell.
  • 1st treatment should be done asap.
  • 2nd treatment must be done within 7-10 days
  • Daily lice checks are essential
  • Follow up with weekly checks using a good nit comb.  Lice Squad one appears to be the most effective and comes highly recommended by other parents.  Available at licesquad.com
