Public Health fact sheet: Head Lice
Hair and Head Lice: Treatment and Prevention
PREVENTION:
- Keep long hair tied up in ponytails or even better, braids or a bun.
- Use a little hairspray to keep stray hairs contained.
- Use tea tree oil either by adding a few drops to your regular shampoo, or by making a spritz by adding a few drops to water in a spray bottle. Tea tree oil can be very drying, so only use a few drops (as directed).
TREATMENT:
- There a plenty of options available. Ask a pharmacist, especially if you have any known allergies or intolerances. A lot of parents recommend using Nyda. Its available at Costco and Rexell.
- 1st treatment should be done asap.
- 2nd treatment must be done within 7-10 days
- Daily lice checks are essential
- Follow up with weekly checks using a good nit comb. Lice Squad one appears to be the most effective and comes highly recommended by other parents. Available at licesquad.com
